SIRRFSA001 – Handle Food Safely in a Retail Environment provides the required qualification to become a Food Safety Supervisor in retail food businesses in all states of Australia.
Food Safety Supervisors work in a variety of retail environments, and this unit is contextualised specifically for Food Safety Supervisors working in retail food environments, including delis, bakeries, convenience stores and other retail providers. Students who complete this course may be employed as a Food Safety Supervisor, may oversee food handling in retail businesses, supervise food handlers and manage food safety risks and hazards in the retail sector. Food Safety Supervisors in retail food businesses work closely with staff and customers to reduce the risk of food borne illness and food poisoning.
Skills and knowledge can be easily applied in your workplace, as information relates directly to the work done in retail food environments.
Explores topics relevant to the retail sector, including managing food safety when using delivery services, and supporting the safety of retail staff.
Always confirm the requirements for your specific industry and state with your state regulator or authority.

Duration
- On average this unit takes 6-8 hours to complete.
- You will have a maximum of 6 months (183 days) to complete the unit.
Practical placement
Students must be able to access a Retail or Hospitality food business to complete three shifts undertaking food handling tasks.
Practical Placement is to be independently arranged by the student with a suitable organisation. Practical Placement can be undertaken as part of employment or as a volunteer.
Course Outcome
On successful completion of the course participants will receive an emailed/downloadable Statement of Attainment.
NSW Course Information
If you’re aiming to operate as a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW, the NSW Food Authority has specific additional requirements.
These include:
- training in four key focus areas identified by the Food Authority:
- allergen management
- safe egg handling, cleaning
- sanitising practices
- Food Act offences.
- Hold a current NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (Valued at $30 and paid to the Government, plus $5 for postage, you may add this at option during checkout.).
EPEC Education is approved to offer the additional training and NSW Food Authority certificate and have made it available with our NSW-specific course options.
In addition to your emailed/downloadable Statement of Attainment, you will also receive a physical copy of your NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate by post.
This certificate must be displayed in your food business, as it is a requirement for operating as a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW.
FAQs
Will the course only take 6-8 hours?
Some students may finish the course in a single day, while others prefer to take breaks and work through it gradually.
Most students find they can complete the Online training and assessment in about 6 to 8 hours.
But don’t worry if it takes a bit longer! Everyone learns at their own pace, and it’s totally okay to take your time.
You can submit your assessment to be marked as many times as required, plus, you can access unlimited free support via email, chat, phone and more.
In addition, you’ll need to complete the 3rd Party Observer Report where you’ll have someone observe your skills, sign off on your progress.
What’s great is that you don’t need to do everything at once. You can log in whenever it’s convenient for you and pick up where you left off.
With up to 6 months to finish the course, you have plenty of time to go at your own speed and make it fit into your schedule.
* How does 24-hour marking work?
Assessments submitted by 10:00am on a business day (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) are scheduled to be marked by 10:00am the next business day.
Submissions received after this time, on weekends, or on public holidays are treated as submitted on the next business day, and the marking timeframe commences from then.
* Is 24-hour marking guaranteed for all submissions?
24-hour marking is offered for first submissions submitted by 10:00am on a business day. We aim to meet this timeframe to support timely progression and provide high-quality feedback.
In some circumstances, including periods of high demand or unforeseen operational constraints, this timeframe may not be achievable.
Where possible, we may be able to prioritise marking for students working to a specific deadline.
Priority marking is assessed on a case-by-case basis and is subject to availability.
If a resubmission is required, we will make reasonable efforts to meet the same 24-hour timeframe.
Please note that turnaround times for resubmissions depend on current demand and availability. Students are encouraged to contact us to confirm expected marking timelines.
When will I receive my Statement of Attainment or Certificate?
Once you have been marked competent and all course requirements have been met, an electronic Statement of Attainment will be issued and emailed to you. It will also be available for download via your student portal.
Statements of Attainment are issued electronically as the standard method of delivery.
When will i receive my NSW Food Authority Food Safety Certificate
For NSW Food Safety courses, an additional physical Food Safety Certificate is required under NSW regulations.
This certificate is issued separately from your Statement of Attainment and cannot be provided electronically.
The NSW Food Safety Certificate is printed in the approved format and mailed to you via Express Post once competency has been confirmed. Delivery timeframes may vary.
Please ensure your postal details in your student portal are accurate before submitting to avoid delays.
